November 2019 Parent Newsletter

Updated: Nov 14, 2019

What an amazing Halloween week in Norfolk! Our SEPAC Board worked hard to organize and host two exciting Halloween Events. Check out the highlights and scroll through the trunks below!

1st Annual FK Great Pumpkin Stroll

Our 1st Annual Great Freeman-Kennedy Pumpkin Stroll was a huge success. We had over 75 people in attendance and many decorated and carved pumpkins! Congratulations to the 3rd Graders for winning the Best Carved Pumpkins and Mr. Cavanaugh for winning the best Teacher-Carved Pumpkin! The Norfolk SEPAC is so grateful to the Norfolk Lions for providing pizza for the event and to the Big Y for donating candy!

5th Annual HOD Trunk or Treat

We had over 100 families take part in our 5th annual Trunk or Treat on Friday 10/25! So many spooky fun costumes and exceptionally decorated trunks! There were three bear sightings, mermaids, circus tents, and lots of spooky fun! A big thank you to Mr. Incredible (aka Mr. Ken) for donating his time to perform for our ghosts and goblins.

Scroll through the photos below to see all the incredible trunks! Thank you to all of the families who donated their time and candy to make this event such a fun part of Halloween at HOD!

SEPAC Parent Education

Did you know that the Norfolk SEPAC compiles local community resources for families on our website? If you are in need of a therapist, sports program, social skills group, or other resource for your child, you can find many different types of resources in the area by visiting our website.

Under the Resources Tab you'll find sections for Activities including Adaptive Sports, Therapists, State-wide Agencies and virtual resources, and a compilation of our recommended books!

Access these resources here at our website: www.norfolksepac.org/resources

Our criteria for selecting resources to include requires someone in our network to have personal experience with the organization recommended. Do you have a resource that you have found helpful and had a great experience? Email us at norfolksepac@gmail.com to share your experience with our community.

SEPAC Book of the Month

Thank you to Mrs. Carolyn Kelley, H. Olive Day School Adjustment Counselor for this excellent book recommendation. We can't wait to read it!

Just Ask!: Be Different, Be Brave, Be You

by Sonya Sotomayor

A #1 New York Times bestseller!

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and award-winning artist Rafael Lopez create a kind and caring book about the differences that make each of us unique.

Feeling different, especially as a kid, can be tough. But in the same way that different types of plants and flowers make a garden more beautiful and enjoyable, different types of people make our world more vibrant and wonderful.

In Just Ask, United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor celebrates the different abilities kids (and people of all ages) have. Using her own experience as a child who was diagnosed with diabetes, Justice Sotomayor writes about children with all sorts of challenges--and looks at the special powers those kids have as well. As the kids work together to build a community garden, asking questions of each other along the way, this book encourages readers to do the same: When we come across someone who is different from us but we're not sure why, all we have to do is Just Ask.
